South Indian Murals Archive (work in progress): While there are innumerable examples of Vijayanagara sculptures abundantly available all throughout South India, the same cannot be said about Vijayanagara paintings. Mural paintings in South India are on the verge of being lost forever due to ravages of time, lack of preservation and sometimes even due to improper conservation. Mural paintings of the Vijayanagara, post and pre Vijayanagara eras in South India, which are national treasures need to be better conserved by experts, archived digitally and studied further. Art and cultural researchers at IIACD are hence, collaborating with researchers as well as professional and amateur heritage photographers in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in researching and documenting Vijayanagara and Post Vijayanagara murals in Karnataka, Andhra and Tamil Nadu. They are working with open source digital heritage technologists at IIACD to co-create a more comprehensive South Indian Murals archive. This archive will be made accessible to scholars, artists and wider public.
IIACD invites art and cultural scholars from other institutes, independent researchers, photographers, filmmakers, designers, technologists to join this much needed endeavor, to research, document, annotate and contribute visual, textual and audio content, co-design and curate the South Indian Murals Archive and help digitally preserve the mural paintings of South India for future generations. IIACD encourages folklore, art history, design, photography, film and open source software technology interns to work with its multidisciplinary experts on this project.
